DOLORES "LALA" BROOKS - formerly of THE CRYSTALS
Among aficionados of the girl group sound, there can't be five acts more beloved than the Crystals. Their best-known songs, which include "He's a Rebel,"
"Uptown," "Da Doo Ron Ron," "Then He Kissed Me," and "There's No Other Like My
Baby," are among the finest examples of the best that American rock & roll
had to offer in the period before the British Invasion. Phil Spector, who at that time was
just starting up his own label, Philles Records, added La
La Brooks to their lineup as lead singer. In 1963 they recorded Da Doo Ron Ron [When He Walked Me Home].The lead vocalist was LaLa Brooks, and the song was a smashing success, peaking
at number three. LaLa also did the lead on the group's next [and final] top ten
hit, Then He Kissed Me, a song that Spector would later say he considered
to be his best one ever. It was these two songs probably more than any others
that helped to form what came to be known as Phil Spector's "Wall Of Sound." They are remembered as one of the first and best of the fabulous girl groups of
the 60's.
