Al Rappa - Bill Haley and The Comets
Bill Haley
and The Comets are known as the first rock and roll band. The group earned a place in The Guinness Book of World Records for selling 43
million copies of its greatest hit, "Rock Around The Clock." The band is now led by original bass and trumpet player, Al Rappa. Al Rappa, "The Original Walking Bass Man," has recorded and toured with
Bill Haley's Comets since 1956. He has appeared with the band in movies and on
Dick Clark's "American Bandstand. Under Al’s leadership, Bill Haley's Comets are on the road today, playing their
music and proving they can still "Rock Around The Clock!" Al Rappa sang and played bass, organ and trumpet with many
notable Philadelphia bands before joining the Comets. He also appeared as a
one-man show.
Bill Haley called on Al to play bass on an instrumental album for Decca in
1956. Two cuts — "Joey's Song" and "Skokiaan" — became hits, and Al began
his long association with Bill Haley’s Comets.
